Airlines Wake Up To Rail Threat

February 25, 2006

The Financial Express, Bureau, Mumbai: The rail budget, normally a non-event for the Indian aviation sector, is re-defining the fare-war for low cost carriers (LCC). While LCCs began by offering attractive fares to woo rail passengers, the new rail budget has met the LCCs head-on by lowering rail fares in a competitive effort to gain back any lost market share. If the LCCs’ initial responses are anything to go by, the fare-war has only just begun. They are already considering a readjustment in prices again. GoAir managing director Jeh Wadia said, “Our aim is to increase the flying base in the country.

GoAir To Buy 20 Airbus Planes For 5,300 Cr

February 23, 2006

The Asian Age, Bureau, Mumbai: GoAir has placed an order for 20 aircraft with Airbus at a contract value of $1.2 billion (approximately Rs 5,300 crore). The orders were placed in the Asian Aero Space Conference in Singapore on Wednesday. "The additional aircraft will allow us to expand aggressively into the North Indian and metro-to-metro flight routes," GoAir managing director Jeh Wadia said in a statement released here on Wednesday. GoAir currently operates 3 Airbus A320s on 24 flights covering 11 cities.

The airline required these planes in order to respond to the "tremendous growth in air traffic we are experiencing in India and the increasing demand for GoAir," Mr Wadia added. GoAir is a low-cost carrier promoted by the Wadia Group, launched in November 2005 with scheduled services to Goa, Ahmedabad, and Coimbatore from Mumbai. The airline had already announced its plans to expand its fleet to 36 aircrafts in three years and the current announcement is part of this plan.

"These aircraft will allow us to develop our network and introduce new routes not previously served and we are excited about being able to offer the "Fly Smarter" experience to more cities and passengers throughout India," Mr Wadia said. The new aircrafts too would have a single-class economy layout with 180 seats.

February 23, 2006

The Asian Age, Correspondent, Mumbai: Wadias-promoted budget airline GoAir on Wednesday announced it will buy 20 A320 aircraft for $1.2 billion (approximately Rs 5,300 crores) from the Toulouse-based Airbus Industrie. “The additional aircraft will allow us to expand aggressively into the North Indian and metro-to-metro flight routes,” Jeh Wadia, GoAir’s managing director, was quoted as saying in a statement issued here. February 23, 2006

Hindustan Times, Bloomberg, Mumbai: GoAirlines said it ordered $1.2 billion of Airbus SAS planes to prepare for competition in a nation where annual air travel may grow 25 per cent until 2010. GoAir has agreed to a firm order for 10 of the Airbus A320 model with options for 10 more from the same family of designs, the airline's Managing Director Jeh Wadia said on Wednesday. The A320 family includes the 107-seat A318 model at $46.4 million each and the 150seat A320 model with a catalog price of $66.5 million.

"To be relevant in the market, they will need to have an optimum fleet," said Kapil Kaul, the New Delhibased chief executive officer of the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation in India. GoAir, which was in talks with Airbus and Boeing for as many as 50 planes, may increase its orders, he said. India's economy may have grown 7.7 per cent in the last quarter, holding near a year-high and making air travel affordable to more of the nation's 1.1 billion people. The number of travellers in India will more than double to 33 million by 2010, according to estimates by the National Council of Applied Economic Research, an independent advisory group.

GoAir Places $1.2 Bn Order For A-320s

February 23, 2006

Business Standard, Corporate Bureau, Meerut: Nusli Wadia-promoted no-frills airline GoAir today placed orders worth $1.2 billion (approximately, Rs 5,341 crore) for 20 aircraft with European aircraft manufacturer Airbus. GoAir Managing Director Jeh Wadia said in a media statement the airline required these planes to respond to the “tremendous growth in air traffic being experienced in India and the increasing demand for GoAir.” The GoAir announcement is in step with the domestic aviation industry’s expansion plans. Air-India announced plans to acquire 68 aircraft from Boeing for an estimated $8.1 billion.

Indian Airlines had placed an order of $2.2 billion for 43 Airbus A320 aircraft. Kingfisher Airlines recently placed a fresh order for 30 Airbus A320s at the Dubai Air Show 2005 in a deal valued at $1.9 billion, which followed its purchase of 20 ATR 72-500 turboprop aircraft valued at $ 350 million. SpiceJet has agreed to convert options for 10 Boeing 737 planes into firm orders and take an additional 10 options in a deal worth $1.4 billion at list price. GoAir today placed the order in Singapore for A-320 aircraft.

The A-320s will have a single-class economy layout with 180 seats. GoAir operates three A 320 airbus for 24 flights covering 11 cities. The additional aircraft will allow the budget airline to expand operations on the northern Indian and metro-to-metro routes. It had announced plans to expand its fleet to 36 aircraft in the next three years. The airline plans to commence operations from Thiruvananthapuram, Nagpur, Bhubaneswar, Srinagar, Jammu, Delhi and Kolkata in a phased manner. Analysts said the GoAir move to place an order with Airbus was logical.

“GoAir is operating an Airbus fleet and had invested in infrastructure that suits Airbus. It includes pilots, engineering services, spare parts and ground handling support systems,” they pointed out.

He was quoted as saying the new fleet would help the airline respond to the "tremendous growth in air traffic we are experiencing in India and the increasing demand for GoAir." Go Goes For 20 A320s

February 23, 2006

Daily News & Analysis, Bureau, Mumbai: Budget carrier GoAir, which launched its services in November 2005, placed an order for 20 planes (10 confirmed and 10 options) with French aerospace company Airbus Industrie on Wednesday in Singapore. The total worth of the 20 A-320s aircraft, based on the list price, is around Rs 5,300 crore ($1.2 billion), and the airline is planning to use them on the north Indian and metro-to-metro routes. The company said that the aircraft would have a single-class economy layout with 180 seats.

GoAir managing director Jeh Wadia said the delivery dates of aircraft are yet to be finalised. “The delivery details and the selection of engine dealers are being worked out. We will finalise these soon,” said Wadia. He said the airline required the planes to respond to the tremendous growth in air traffic (growing at over 28%) in India. “These aircraft will allow us to develop our network and introduce new routes not previously served,” said Wadia. GoAir currently operates 24 flights to 11 Indian cities on its three leased A320s.

The budget carrier, which is being promoted by the Rs 1,200-crore Bombay Dyeing group, will fund the aircraft acquisition through both internal and external resources. “We have not yet drawn up a road map for the funding of the order,” said Wadia. Today, India is among the world’s biggest buyers of aircraft. Almost all the airlines, Jet Airways, Kingfisher, Air Deccan and SpiceJet have placed orders for the new aircraft last year. Last year, the yet-to-be-launched IndiGo Airlines created a furore at the Paris air show by ordering 100 A320s.

Over the last one year, Indian air carriers have placed orders for over 400 aircraft. Analysts say that with the aviation sector growing at over 28%, the addition of new capacity on existing and new routes will easily fill up. “In fact, there is room for more capacity on several sectors,” said an analyst. However, they caution that even as airlines expand their network and raise capacity, yield and revenue management on flights would play a very important role in ensuring that the rising cost of operation does not burn a hole in their pockets.

Indian Carriers On Buying Spree At Air Show

February 22, 2006

The Indian Express, Economic Bureau, Mumbai: The aircraft ordering spree by Indian carriers is likely to gain momentum over the next few days with a number of carriers planning to place orders at the Asian Aerospace exhibition being held in Singapore.

Go Air, a low cost carrier, is likely to make an announcement on its acquisitions in the next couple of days. "We are in talks with the manufacturers and we plan to make an official announcement on the acquistion in the next two days," Go Air managing director Jeh Wadia said. SpiceJet has also managed to bag options for buying 10 aircraft for its future requirements. With this deal, the company has placed a firm order for 20 aircraft and has an option for 10 more.

Go Air May Seal Deal For 20 Aircraft Shortly

February 15, 2006

Economic Times, Girish Rao, Bangalore: THE WADIA Group-promoted Go Air may soon sign a deal for the purchase of 15-20 Airbus 320 or Boeing 737 aircraft with the respective aircraft manufacturers, although market sources say the airline is inclined to go with the European aircraft maker.

However, Go Air managing director Jeh Wadia told ET that a final decision on the numbers and the aircraft make will be made this week. However, he said the airline is targeting a fleet of 28/32 planes by ’08 which will be a mix of lease and buy (plain vanilla lease, sale and lease back, etc). An announcement may, therefore, follow at the Singapore Airshow next week, sources said.

According to Mr Wadia, the airline is not only evaluating the prospects of a buy from either of the plane manufacturers, but will also take a firm call on a mid or long-term purchase plan.

From the manufacturers’ perspectives the group has a record of sustaining business and would keep coming back for more planes as the market grows, Mr Wadia stated.

Even though the airline has been operating one type of aircraft, it could always switch over to another while the fleet numbers were small if the economics of the new offer was better, he added.

The Mumbai-based budget airline currently operates a fleet of three leased A320s which will be scaled up to six by September ’06. By ’07, the airline is planning on a fleet of 15/17 planes and 28-32 by ’08 to cover about 240 sectors daily.
